I ended up needing to host an event with the four xboxs with about 2 weeks notice. It then struck me that I could potentially fit all of them into an Ikea cabinet with some additional shelves fitted which greatly reduced the cost and also the aesthetic value.
All four xboxs HDMI outputs get mixed into 1 signal and are separated into the four corners
The audio is separately mixed together and fed into some kind of stereo system
The four xboxs networks are wired together through a cheap 5 port switch, this allows them to potentially be connected further into another network since one port is free
Exhaust fans line the back of the box in order to keep the infamously prone to overheating xboxs cool
Power supplies for the xboxs and accessories are all fitted within the bottom compartment of the box, great for center of gravity!
12V & 5V power is provided form an ATX power supply installed in the bottom compartment
The 4 video signals goes into this little box and it outputs '60 fps' at 1080p. Meaning each xbox is only drawing 1/4 of the pixels of 1080p, so to save on potential performance they're all set to output 720p.
This box can only output 1 of the hdmi inputs' audio.
Each xbox has an optical audio output which goes into one of these converters.
The converted audio is sent to this mixer where it can be balanced, left two xboxs to the left and right two to the right. Pretty cool right?
Due to the HDMI multi-viewer not mixing the audio for the screen - this system requires a stereo system to get all of the audio, though just a simple USB powered bluetooth speaker can do the trick fine enough
I forgot to wipe off the pencil marks on the sides and now they're too difficult to get to, oops!
Several intake and exhaust fans salvaged from computers over the years. I knew I would eventually find a use for all of them.
They're powered by an old ATX power supply fitted into the bottom of the box along with all the xbox power transformers (I'm sure it gets way too hot down there)
The column with the larger fans blows air into the case while the other sucks it back out in line with the built in xbox exhaust fans. So far during use I've not heard any of the xboxs ramp up their fans too loud.Â
Fingers crossed I dont get any RRODs
The xbox remote design is really great, but when there are 16 of them in one room they become a total mess
There is masking tape beside the left bumper with a number corresponding to which Xbox its (meant to be) synced to, so when everyone gets back from having some pizza for dinner its just that much easier to get back into it
Halo is installed from the disc onto the hard drive to reduce noise and heat from the disc drive.
Despite the 720p Xbox being split into 4 players and then split into 4 more sections in 1080p the text all remains adequately readable, a testament to original developers design
I made about 6-7 preset profiles for each Xbox so players can pick a name and everyone be able to identify them before the end of the evening. They're suffix is numbered to correspond to which Xbox they're using
IT WORKS! Now I just need 15 more friends
No Idea how best to store all the remotes
